QUICK & EASY TIPS FOR 2017 – PART 1
So to start the new year, we wanted to share some of these quick and easy habits with you, delivered in a 3 part blog series with info from experts at WebMD, CNN and the New York Times. Read Part 1 below and learn why it’s common to get drowsy at 2PM…and how to fight it with activity, water and diet.
Have you ever wondered why your energy level stays strong in the morning, but crashes around 2PM in the afternoon? You’re not the only one, in fact this afternoon sleepiness is part of your body’s natural rhythm. According to WebMD, between 2-4 PM your brain releases it’s natural sleep chemical, melatonin, telling your body it’s time to go to sleep. The problem is, unless you work at Google, you probably don’t have access to a napping pod. Fortunately, there are some good ways to not only keep your head up, but maintain the same mental clarity and focus you had in the morning:
Move around – Sitting for prolonged periods of time leads to fatigue and health problems that result from lack of blood circulation. An easy remedy is to stand up, stretch and walk around at least once an hour. Even breaks as short as 1 min can improve your health and energy levels.
Limit sugar and refined carbs at lunch – Eating sugar and refined carbohydrates (white bread/pasta/rice) will spike your blood sugar, followed by a rapid drop that leaves you feeling tired and sluggish. To avoid an afternoon crash, try limiting products with added sugar (soft drinks, latte’s, cookies, packaged foods) and replacing refined carbs with complex carbs (whole wheat bread, whole grain pasta, brown rice).
Stay hydrated – Even mild dehydration can make you feel tired, sluggish and moody. This can happen with with as little as a loss of 1.5% of your body’s water weight. So keep a glass of water nearby to sip on throughout the day.
Take a Voke Tab at 2PM – Voke is your afternoon Go-Tab. All you need is one to stay alert all afternoon.
